Bloody Sunday -- made everyone angrier
Revolts surge to a paralyzing general strike forcing the govmnt to give in
- October manifesto issued
- full civil rights granted
- granted popular elected Duma (parliament -- now a constitutional monarchy, liberal middle class happy w/ this)
Middle class immediately helps put down the revolts
Constitutional monarchy
- duma elected through universal male suffrage
- Tsar has absolute veto power, upsets liberals
- hand picked ministers (not chosen by Duma)
- Middle class wanted more from the Tsar
- duma is dismissed
- new elections overwhelmingly gave power to propertied classes
- laws were passed to end collective land ownership to encourage more enterprising peasants (kicked off land and mistreated)
