War of Spanish Succession (jul 9, 1701 – mar 7, 1714)
Description:
The War of Spanish Succession was triggered after the last Spanish Habsburg, Charles II, died childless. The war was fought between the Bourbons (Louis XIV and his grandson Philip) and the Grand Alliance (England, Dutch, Austrians, Prussians) over control of the Spanish throne. Eventually, the Peace of Utrecht ended the war. It stated that Philip could take the throne, but the French and Spanish crowns could never be united. In addition, France had to surrender much territory in the American colonies to England. This war marked the end of French expansion.Added to timeline:
