Franco-Prussian War (jul 19, 1870 – may 10, 1871)

Description:

Bismarck wants to convince southern Catholic Germany to join northern Germany, so provokes France into starting a patriotic war.

(There was a new person in line for the Spanish throne related to Germany, so Bis rallies pretending that that would be great for Germany --> France gets worried, don't want to be a German sandwich. Nap III sends delegate to Prussia to tell them to stop, but Will I is like "ok" and Bis doesn't want that. Delegate sends Ems telegram to france but Bis intercepts and changes it to be rude. Meanwhile Bis has an army ready for when France freaks, Nap starts war.)

South German states support Prussia, Prussia wins. France surrenders.

Creation of Second German Empire
- southern states join NGC
- William I is crowned emperor of Germany
- France was humiliated, had to pay a lot and give up territory (France will remember make Germany pay in WWI)
- Germany now strongest of the Quadruple Alliance
- regularly elected reichstag
- national govmnt's parliament was led by a chancellor (bismarck)

universal male suffrage, but still conservative because veto power

bismarck pro-union, makes radical socialists happy
