Reign of Pope Bonaface IV (jan 7, 1294 – aug 13, 1303)
Description:
issued a papal bull known as Unam Sanctum (1302) in the midst of a dispute with French King Philip IV over the king’s attempt to tax the clergy; this papal bull, one of the most important in the papacy’s history, stated that spiritual and temporal power fell under the pope’s jurisdiction and that kings’ power was under that of the church.
During the heated dispute, Philip’s soldiers raided the pope’s residence, beat Boniface, and took the pope prisoner. Boniface escaped but died shortly thereafter, greatly weakened by the event.
