Typhoid Fever (jun 5, 1900 – aug 26, 2018)

Description:

-Transmitted via the fecal oral route
-Caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria
-over 2000 kinds of this bacteria
-Can only infect humans
-replicate in the GI tract and blood
-10-20% fatality rate
-Largest outbreak in the US was in 1907-1908, 10771 people died of the disease
-1914 a vaccine was developed, live attenuated oral vaccine which is 50-80% effective with 4 doses and a booster needed every 5 years. The other is a subunit intramuscular vaccine which is also 50-80% effective but only needs 1 dose and a booster every 2 years.
-Good hand hygiene and proper sanitation are also good prevention methods
-Treatments are available through antibiotics such as ampicillin, chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin
-Symptoms improve in 1-2 days and recovery in 7-10 days with supportive therapy given like Tylenol for fever and iv fluids for dehydration
