In 1970, upon his return from musical research trips in Ghana and USA Kuti mans a range of shifts in his music, image and artistry to reflect a growing global Black consciousness movement. He changes his band name to " Afrika 70" starts using an adaptation of the Black Power fist in his iconography. He opens a club called "Afrika Shrine" and his music begins to address more political themes including, classism, Global anti-Blackness, colorism, and Nigerian militarism
