Lewis and Clark (apr 16, 1804 – sep 23, 1806)
Description:
Lewis and Clark (1804 – 06):
A huge part of the history of American exploration and expansion, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark were sent to explore land obtained from the Louisiana Purchase. Thomas Jefferson wanted to send them to explore the Missouri River, make diplomatic contact with Native Americans, and expand the American fur trade. However, the mission became much more in depth after the Louisiana purchase, when Napoleon sold 828,000 square miles of territory for $27 million. Jefferson asked his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to lead the expedition and they set out for the west.
