Old Lights vs. New Lights (sep 30, 1700 – sep 30, 1799)

Description:

Old Lights/New Lights (1700’s):

The Great Awakening was a time of explosive reinvention of religious tendencies and had a large impact on England and the American colonies. It was a sudden expansion of Protestant Revivalism in the eighteenth century in which the beliefs of the New Lights competed with the more conservative religion of the Old Lights. New Light preachers would use much less popular methods of preaching. These included preaching outside and using more gruesome or personalized details, as well as other techniques, that made each session exciting and entertaining to some spectators and it reignited interests in religion. The New Lights went for Emotional appeal where the Old Lights went for a more traditional, and rational approach.
