Description:
Asiento (1520’s):
A way of granting a monopoly to a private individual, company, or sovereign power between the 16th and the mid-18th century. Asiento was an agreement from Spain that granted a monopoly in supplying African slaves for the Spanish colonies in the Americas. The contractor or the asentista paid a set price to the king or ruler to have the monopoly on the business. In return they would provide a decided number of male and female slaves to be sold in the American Markets.
