Black Legend (sep 30, 1540 – sep 30, 1549)
Description:
Black Legend (1540’s):
This was propaganda that criticized the Spanish Empire and accused them of cruelty and intolerance, which made Spain look like a harsh and brutal colonizer. The term, Black Legend, which became prevalent from the works of many non-Spanish, and especially Protestant, historians, was important because it gave many inhabitants of European nations a reason to explore the Americas. England, for example, used Spain's excuse of trying to promote Christianity as a reason for exploration and sent many Englishmen to the New World to help preach and spread Protestantism.
