Montgomery Bus Boycott (dec 5, 1955 – dec 20, 1956)
Description:
What: The Montogomery Bus Boycott was a political and social movement in protest of the segregation of blacks and whites on public transit.
Who: Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Women's Political Council, NAACP
Where: Montgomery, Alabama
Cause: Public transit was racially segregated and many black people were sick of this treatment of being pushed towards the back of the bus to make room for white people. Rosa Parks took a stand (or more literally - a seat) and refused to move when told to so a white man could take her seat. She was then arrested.
Effect: Browder v. Gale, a case regarding segregation on public buses and other transit, made it's way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court upheld the decision made by the District Court to desegregate public transit. The boycott also gave rise to Martin Luther King Jr.
