Description:

Hungarian revolution leads Imre Nagy to declare Hungary’s neutrality and withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact; suppressed by Soviet invasion (with several thousand fatalities). First real challenge to SU's power. Polarized opinion in the Eastern Bloc. Led to Poznan uprising in Poland in '56 and rise of Gomulka, who prompted further protests in the '70s and led the Solidarity movement
