Dominion of New England (feb 5, 1686 – nov 5, 1689)

Description:

created after the charter of the Massachusetts Bay colony was revoked because of defiance against the crown. The Dominion was created by royal authority and was eventually expanded to encompass New York and East and West Jersey. The Dominion’s goal was to unite the colonial defense resources in case of war with the Indians, as well as enforce the Navigation Laws, which aimed to restrict the colonies to trade within the English Commonwealth. The Dominion was controlled by Sir Edmund Andros, who rid the colonies of town hall meetings, was openly affiliated with the much-despised Church of England, and taxed the people without the consent of the elected representatives. The Glorious Revolution, in which angry Englishmen overthrew King James II, inspired colonists, who immediately attempted to destroy the Dominion. Though Andros was kicked out of power, Massachusetts was made a royal colony, a staggering blow to the traditionalist Puritans who treasured the ancient charter.
