Cultural Revolution (aug 1, 1966 – oct 1, 1976)

Description:

The Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution was carried on by teams of Red Guards, comprised of university and middle school students, in order to fight Communist party hierarchy, including Liu Shaoqi, whom he had imprisoned and beaten. The Gang of Four, which included Mao's wife Jiang Qing, purged all western media as the cultural aspect of the revolution. Although the revolution caused significant chaos, order was restored by a moderate, Zhou Enlai, who focused on modernization in a time when the economy and innovation were restricted by Maoist ideals. Hua Guofeng took over Mao's positions and arrested the Gang of Four and reinvigorated Deng Xiaoping's leadership, thus ending the revolution.
