Three Gorges Dam (oct 4, 1994 – dec 16, 2012)

Description:

The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest dam. Built on the Yangtze river, construction lasted from 1994 to 2012, and displaced over one million people. It was built to provide hydroelectricity, and represents a push for clean energy. However, studies have indicated that it threatens natural habitats, fisheries and may induce landslides due to it’s sheer mass. Despite widespread claims, the Chinese government did not acknowledge these possible consequences until 2011, even as they continue to push the construction of similar dams to provide more hydroelectricity.
