Description:
Evolves out of Dada, lead by Breaton a poet who had disdain for the nonsense of Dada. Breaton wrote the manifesto in 1924. Three streams; abstract/bimorphic, representational, and sculpture.
Influenced by the theories of Freud, particularly that of the subconscious and hidden/repressed desires. Art depicted and emphasized unity of dreams and reality. Associated with sexuality and repressed gender expression/gender fluidity. Meant to jolt views into a higher reality.
Notable artists include; Masson, Miro, (associated with abstract/bimorphic) Magritte, Dali, (associated with representational) Oppenheim, Man Ray, and Arp (associated with sculpture)
