• Facts:
o Stigma involved
o Humans and armadillos are the only host
o Mycobacterium leprea which prefer cooler temperatures in the skin and peripheral nerve cells
o Sanctuary for leprosy patients (quarantine)
o Last remaining colony is in Molokai Hawaii
• Transmission/Symptoms:
o Airborne droplets
o Comes and infects the lungs and spreads through the blood
o Visual signs, tissue/nerve damage, and loss of sensation
o Café au Lait Lesion
o Tuburculoid leprosy
o Lepromatous leprosy
• Not eradicated
• Treatment:
o PB/MB treatment for adults and children
• Historical Events:
o 1873: Armauer Hausen determines the cause of Leprosy
o 1933: Laboratory and research testing
o 2012: 189,018 new cases of leprosy world-wide
