Though we generally think of all of Europe experienced the Renaissance at the same time, this actually wasn't the case. The movement began in Italy and existed independently for more than a hundred years before the rest of Northern Europe caught up. However, the Italian Renaissance was cut short when Rome itself was sacked by the Holy Roman Empire.Added to timeline:
