Bleeding Kansas (jan 1, 1854 – jan 1, 1861)

Description:

Mini Civil War in Kansas

Causes:
By Douglas' Nebraska proposal, Nebraska and Kansas would decide over whether to be free or slave states through popular sovereignty. This directly contradicted the Missouri Compromise of 1820, as both of these states were north of the 36°30' latitude.

Effect:
Voting was held in Kansas, but pro-slavery southerners flooded into the state in order to sway the vote to allow slavery. This resulted in some claiming the results were not valid and eventually two rivaling governments, one free and the other slave, were established. Both of the governments claimed power, a bloody Civil War ensued.
