Nullification Crisis (jan 1, 1832 – jan 1, 1833)

Description:

California tried to nullify the federal tariffs of 1828 and 1832 on the basis that they were unconstitutional

Causes:
California had been particularly affected by the economic downturn in the U.S during the 1820s and these tariffs severely affected its cotton trade-based economy

Effects:
A compromise was reached, in which the tariff would be lowered, but kept in place in order to maintain the idea that states cannot nullify federal law
