The Reign of Terror (sep 5, 1793 – jul 28, 1794)

Description:

The state of violence and constant executions that ensued during a time where radical propaganda feared internal enemies and republican government attempted to suppress this. Many of these supposed enemies were in fact simply innocents, who along with the rest of their compatriots were often executed without due trial.

The republic also established the Commitee of General Safety and the Commitee of Public safety. Ironically, they did not really provide much safety to the people of france. They enjoyed almost dictatorial power and maintained the integrity of the revolutionary ideals.

Most notably among the leaders of the Reign of Terror is Robespierre who executed countless innocents, deposed his opposition, and suppressed women. His actions, like those of the reign, were taken to promote civic virtue in France, as per the ideal unselfish society written about by Rousseau.
