Kingdom Of the Franks (jul 1, 509 – mar 21, 814)

Description:

Started as various Germanic clans that moved from northern Europe into Gaul.

Two main dynasties the Merovingian Dynasty and the Carolingian Dynasty.

First United under of King Clovis in 509 AD.
Founded the Merovingian Dynasty, next 200 years.

Converted to Christianity and was the first king of the Franks to be recognized as king by the Pope.

Rulers grew lazy and frail so much so work was put on the shoulders of the Mayors of the Palace.

Charles Martel was most well known of these Mayors of the Palace.

In AD 732, lead Franks to triumph over the Moors at Tours

Overthrew and set up the Carolingian Dynasty
with help from Pope Zachary (Lombards)
Charles and
Carloman (monastery)

Charles helped the church (Saxons), (Pope Leo).
Named Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope 800, renamed Charlemagne (Charles the Great).
Divided empire into 52 counties and appointed a count to run each county.

Had specialists called Missi Domenici, (ensure they were honest).

Supported education.

Constructed various schools, wanted his subjects to learn to read and write(illiterate).
Died in AD 814, leaving empire to his three grandsons.

Mark the collapse of the Franks

Middle of the three kingdoms was absorbed by eastern and western kingdoms.

These two kingdoms would reemerge as the modern countries of France and Germany.
