Crusades (mar 24, 1000 – may 15, 1200)
Description:
The crusades were created to reconquer Jerusalem, which back then was controlled by Muslims. It would also increase the wealth of the Catholic Church and the Pope. When people go for a holy war, they would trust the Church with their property. If they die, all the money would be Church’s. It would also increase the influence of Catholic over European countries and would suppress the Greek Orthodox Church. The church believed that by diverting the lord’s attention to the holy war and against Muslims, they could get peace. (no lords will be fighting each other) The first crusades happened between 1096 ~ 1099. They conquered Syria and easily conquered Jerusalem. The Europe kings established Jerusalem kingdom. During the third crusade, all the Europe’s strongest kings participated in taking back Jerusalem from Saladin, the ruler of Islamic Egypt. In 1192, after the long fight, both Saladin and Richard I got sick, and Richard I was overthrown by his brother, John. With both of the leaders retired, Christians and Muslims signed a peace treaty. Europeans failed to take back Jerusalem from Muslims.
