Description: Religious revival that impacted the 13 colonies in America. This revival emphasized that all people are born sinners, but all people can be saved by admitting their sins and accepting God's grace. It also pursued a more direct, personal, and emotional relationship with God.
Causes:
Big time colonial ministers like Johnathan Edwards and George Whitefield emphasized salvation and promoted enthusiasm for Christianity again
Secular rationalism grows more popular with Enlightenment and Scientific ideals coming from Europe
Religion seemed to be becoming ancient
Historical Impact:
Split New England clergy and religious followers into two groups, the Old Lights v. the New Lights
Growth of church and certain denominations
May have influenced American Revolution against Britain by advocating nationalism and individual rights
Newly established colleges such as Princeton, Rutgers, Brown and Dartmouth that are still prestigous today
