Civil War (apr 12, 1861 – may 9, 1865)
Description:
The bloodiest four years in American history begin when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. Decades of built-up tension between northern and southern states over slavery, states' rights, and westward expansion exploded when Lincoln was elected.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. In the last days of fighting, Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
