Development of Water Transportation (jan 1, 1820 – jan 1, 1836)

Description:

Steamboats were becoming more and more popular to not only travel by but transport goods.
Causes: The use of rivers and lakes for transportation became practical with the steamboat. Flatboats, which could not return the trip, became obsolete and steamboats made transportation a lot faster as well as cheaper.
Historical Impact: Many canals were built to optimize steamboat usage such as the Erie Canal, which eventually caused cities like New York City, Cleveland, and Chicago to swell into major commercial cities.
