German Revolution of 1848 (mar 13, 1848 – apr 29, 1849)
Description:
-liberals wanted a constitutional monarchy
-Frederick William IV relied heavily on Junkers, was very anti-liberal
-riots in Berlin
-finally agrees to liberal constitution and Prussian Constituent Assembly begins meeting in Berlin
-Meanwhile.... middle class Germans started meeting in Frankfurt (Frankfurt Assembly/German National Assembly) to write a constitution for Germany and to unify Germany at the same time
-try to start by taking over Schleswig-Holstein (b/c it was owned by the Danes but they spoke German)
-called on Prussian army to do it
-Prussia realized they were weak and deposed of National Assembly in Berlin
-when they offered to elect him as emperor he refused to take the crown from the gutter
-asserted his divine right
-barricades!
-crushed by Prussian army
-Austria forced Prussia to give up any plans for German unification
