Austrian Revolution of 1848 (mar 13, 1848 – aug 28, 1849)
Description:
-February revolts in France led to liberalism spreading to Austria
-Vienna there were revolts
-Metternich fled
-Ferdinand I proposed a new constitution
-also abolished serfdom
-peasants were appeased
-Meanwhile, coalition of revolutionaries in Vienna broke down, because revolutionaries insisted on national workshops and universal suffrage
-middle class did not like that
-nationalism weakened coalition (Hungarians wanted independence)
-plus other minority groups wanted independence
-SO... Hapsburg rulers played different groups off each other and ended the revolution
-Archduchess Sophia was embarrassed by Ferdinand's behavior and demanded that he abdicate in favor of her son, Franz Joseph
-military crushes revolt in Vienna
-w/ help of Russia, Hungarian revolt is also subdued
