The Renaissance (1485-1660) (feb 3, 1485 – jun 4, 1660)

Description:

The word renaissance comes from the French and means rebirth.

The Renaissance is the rebirth of Europe, a period when scholars became more interested in studying the world around them, when art became more lifelike, and when Europeans began to explore new lands. Arab scholars preserved the writings of the ancient Greeks in their libraries. When traders from cities in northern Italy came into contact with Arabs, they exchanged ideas as well as goods. Many Christians scholars moved to Italy from Greece after the Byzantine empire fell to the Turks in 1453.

The Renaissance influenced paintings, sculpture, and architecture. Painting became more realistic and focused less often on religious topics. Rich families became patrons by commissioned great art Artists advanced the Renaissance style of showing nature and depicting the feelings of people.

Considered the greatest English-speaking writer in history and known as England’s national poet; the bard, William Shakespeare (1564-1616) has had more theatrical works performed than any other playwright.
