Compromise of 1850 (jan 1, 1850 – jan 1, 0)

Description:

It led to the civil war by installing the Fugitive Slave Act, banning slave trade in DC, admitting California as a free state, splitting up the Texas territory and instating Squatter Sovereignty ( which was proposed by Lewis Cass who lost the presidential election of 1848 against Zachary Taylor) in the Mexican Cession. Millard Fillmore, the successor of President Zachary Taylor, helped pass the compromise by gaining the support of Northern Whigs.
Fugitive Slave Law was tougher and was aimed at eliminating the underground railroad which helped slaves escape to North by the help of a famous ex-slave conductor Harriet Tubman. The election of 1852 was contested after the compromise of 1850 where Franklin Pierce became a president.
