The middle English was between the years 1066-1450.

Middle English is about the Norman invasion and the French influence. The Norman invasion in 1066 is about a Frenchman called "William the Conqueror" which became the king of England. About 10,000 French words were incorporated to the English language.

During the Middle English, there were social and cultural changes and also changes in the language and in the literature such as; French was introduced as the language of the royal court and in the law. French became the language of the kings and nobility of England for more than 300 years. Today the Swedish language, for example, is influenced by English. Also, a range of literary genres emerged during the middle English, including chivalric romances, religious songs, folk ballads, drama, morality, and miracle plays.

The Canterbury tales Written by Jeffrey Chaucer is a significant work as it is considered a determining factor for English to develop into a national language, the middle English. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 20 stories which give a realistic picture of medieval society often with a touch of satire and humor.
The first part of Canterbury tales is among the best-known of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury tales which provides insights into the role of women in the late Middle Ages.
