Russo-Japanese War

Description:
Russia wanted to get Chinese Manchurian ports, esp Port Arthur;
Japan thought that Manchuria & Korea controlled by Russia threatened them; Japanese (1904) surprise attacked Russian fleet on Port Arthur; Dealt Russians several other major scronts; First serious military setback to major Euro power by non-Euro force since Turkish invasion in 1500s;
Japanese ran out of men & $$ as war went on → Tokyo approached TR for help, asked him to sponsor peace negotiations; TR wanted to avoid complete Russian collapse so Russia could be counterweight to Japanese power → helped Japanese w/ peace negotiations
(1905) Portsmouth, New Hampshire TR guided settlement, satisfied neither side, left Japanese resentful bcuz they thought they won war; Japan had to drop demands for cash indemnity & Russian evacuation of Sakhalin Island; Japan got some control over Korea & formally annexed Korea (1910); TR receives Nobel Peace Prize (1906)
