Patriotic Chinese didn’t want to be used as doormat by W powers; 1900 “Boxers” (v patriotic group) trained in martial arts, wanted to “Kill Foreign Devils”; Boxer Rebellion - killed >200 foreigners, thousands of Chinese christians, seized foreign diplomatic community in capital Beijing (Peking);

Multinational rescue force of ~18k soldiers arrived to subdue rebellion; Few thousand = US troops dispatched from Philippines to protect US rights under 1844 Treaty of Wanghia & keep Open Door; Invaders said China owed them $333 mill, US included who wanted $24.5 mill, US remitted ~$18 mill to be used for education of selected group of Chinese students in US as initiate to Westernize China;
