War of Spanish Succession (jun 18, 1701 – apr 6, 1778)
Description:
After the death of Charles II, he left the Spanish crown to Philip of Anjou, who was Louis XIV’s grandson. This will violated a prior treaty, which Louis XIV broke by accepting the will. The English, Dutch, Austrians and Prussians formed the Great Alliance to counter Louis XIV, with the war ending with the Peace of Utrecht—it allowed Philip to remain king of Spain on the condition that France and Spain never united, and France surrendered Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and the Hudson Bay territory to England. The Peace of Utrecht set limits on how much France could expand and represented the end of French expansion in Europe.
