o Discovered in 1837
o Annie Frank passed away from Typhus
o Poverty, filth, starvation, poor hygiene areas are more to getting the disease
o Types of Typhus:
♣ Rocky mountain spotted fever
♣ Scrub Typhus
♣ Endemic Typhus
♣ Epidemic Typhus

• Transmission and Symptoms: body lice “jumps” onto host or embedded into clothing
o fever that lasts two weeks. Intense headache, chills, rash all over body except face, palms of hands or soles of feet. you will go crazy=”fog”, mental confusion, coma, seizures
• Not eradicated
• Treatment: spray, good hygiene, antibiotics, no vaccine
• Historical Events

o 1881: Carlos Finlay was involved in understanding the transmission of Typhus
o 1892: Typhus Fever Epidemic which resulted to 1,200 people quarantined
o 1917: There was a bath riot where the US were afraid that Mexican immigrants were the prime population for lice, so they sprayed them with pesticides.
