Description:

• Facts:
o Tuskegee was found unethical that lead to 100 men who have passed because they were just being observed when they were told they were being treated . 
o Guatemalan Study lead to experimenting with penicillin to the people
o 19 million STI every year
o Columbian Theory: Columbus and his peers contracted the disease from peoples in the West Indies
o Treponema pallidum: Humans are the only host
o The disease is preventable
o Stigma involved

• Transmission/Symptoms:
o 3 stages...
1. painless, pea -size ulcer found at the site
2. headache, rash, fever
3. Destruction of tissue, bone, and muscle
o can be transmitted sexually and through a mother to her unborn child 
- Congenital Syphilis, Mother to child-->saber shins, mulberry molars, saddle nose
o Cardiovascular syphilis
o Neurological syphilis
o Gummatous syphilis
• Not eradicated
• Treatment:
o Antibiotics
o Wear condoms
• Historical Events:
o 1493: first documented outbreak in Naples
o 1905: Discovered
o 1909: Paul Ehrlich introduced Salvarsan as a treatment for syphilis
o 1932: Tuskegee Study where men were observed and not being treated when they were told they were. It resulted to 100 men dead
o 1946: Guatemalan Study where people were purposefully infected with penicillin and some developed some complications
