Black Codes (feb 17, 1865 – dec 18, 1871)

Description:

As slavery ended an states began to be added back into the union, Southerners started to participate in congress but Radical Republicans did not like it and wanted to push them out. The reason was that many state governments in the South limited suffrage to white people. Also it discriminated against African Americans. President Johnson vetoed much of the legislation proposed by the Radical Republicans in congress
