Middle ages: Old English (jan 1, 428 – jan 1, 1066)

Description:

The Middle Ages is the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance. This period was referred to as the dark age.

During the medieval period, it was the time of the old English and Middle English that bloomed when England was under the rule of the Roman Empire. Old English was a west Germanic dialect and the people who inhabited Great Britain from the 5th Century were called Anglo-Saxon. The official most used and powerful language was latin but between common people the Celtic language was used, such as the Indo-European languages spoken today in northwest Europe.

Around the year 450, Celtic England was invaded by Germanic tribes such as Angels, Saxon, and Jutes. This led to the impact of Vikings and Old Norse mythology. Today we know this happened because of core vocabulary and street names.

The oldest fictitious written story was Beowulf, during the 8th and 11th century about a hero from southern Sweden named Beowulf. His destiny was to save and fight for his people against monsters and dragons. This work of his was written in more than 3,000 lines.
