French Revolution (jul 14, 1789 – nov 8, 1799)

Description:

The French Revolution was a revolution in France from 1789 to 1799. It led to the end of the monarchy and the death of King Louis XVI. The revolution ended when Napoleon overthrew the revolutionary government and established the French Consulate.

Contributions to Classical Liberalism:
The lower class citizens and the Bourgeoisie wanted to abolish the strict class system in France and wanted to implement the Rule of Law. It was unfair that the aristocracy, royalty and nobility often came before the law while the lower classes still had to suffer the consequences. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was signed in August 26, 1794 and was a foundational document for individual freedoms. The document shows how the principles of liberalism came to influence French society.
