Chiang Ching-kuo (may 20, 1978 – jan 13, 1988)

Description:

(27 April 1910 – 13 January 1988)
Son of Chiang Kai-shek, formally became president in 1978.

The authoritarian government became someshat more open under his rule. As President he allowed more native Taiwanese to take up more political positions.

Pro-democracy demonstrations during his tenure in December of 1979 led to the Kaohsiung Incident - the arrest of the main leaders of Taiwan's political opposition.

Towards the end of his life he relaxed government controls on media and speech.
