Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
1798 - 1799, states' rights issue (apr 19, 1789 – sep 19, 1799)
Description:
Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions was a measures passed by legislatures od Virginia and Kentucky. It was a protest against the Federalist Alien and Sedition Acts and it was written anomyously by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Madison hoped that other states would also would register their opposition to the Alien and Sedition Acts as beyond the powers given to Congress. In the Kentucky Resolutions Jefferson asserted that states had the power to nullify unconstitutional federal laws.
