Rome's greatest influence may have been in the field of law. Roman law was enforced across much of Europe. Even after the empire fell, Roman laws continued to exist in the kingdoms that followed. Over time, the Roman law inspired something called the civil law. Civil law is a legal system based on a written code of laws, like the one created by the Romans.
