- 10 years after the end of WWII, artists stated confronting what they believed started the war (materialism, consumerism, militarism, and nationalism)
- there was mixed feelings about America
- America was seen as Europe's liberator
- influenced by Existentialism
KLEIN
- concerned with the dramatization of ideas beyond the creation of individual works of art
- mystical aesthetic
- blue monochrome abstractions 9created his own shade of blue)
- symbolized unity and serenity
- was a representation of the immaterial and the liberation of the spirit
- had no indication of the artist's hand on its surface
- practical demonstration of levitation
- altered photograph to remove the tarp that caught him
- obsessed with levitation and flight
Anthropometries
- nude models were his "living brushes" that were covered in paint and rolled on canvases to create imprints
- the process was as important as the final product
MANZONI
- canned and label his own excrements
- work would be accompanied with signed certificates
- also signed people to make them art
- This takes the Duchampian notion of declaring objects art to a new level - Manzoni extends the notion of the readymade to include living people.
