Bataan Death March (apr 9, 1942 – apr 15, 1942)
Description:
The Bataan Death March was a march which took place in April 1942. The allied soldiers who were captured by the Japanese forces were forced to march about 80 miles across the Bataan Peninsula. After the Battle of Philippines, the Japanese defeated the US and Filipino army on Bataan at the Battle of Bataan. On April 9, 1942, there were about 76,000 combined Filipino and American troops that surrendered to the Japanese. The Japanese commander, General Masaharu Homma then chose to move them to Camp O'Donnell, where the captured troops will be prisoned. The prisoners would march part way to the camp and then transit the other. It is named the Death March as the Japanese did not give the prisoners food or water for three days, resulting in them becoming weaker and weaker. To those that fell behind, they were beaten and killed by the Japanese. This march lasted for six days. Thousands died during the march and atfer they got to camp due to starvation or diseases.
