-Found oxygen made up 20 percent of air and was vital for combustion and respiration
-Discovered that charcoal and diamond were created by the same component element, which he named carbon
-Discovered that water was part hydrogen and oxygen
-Disproved the existence of phlogiston
-Known as the "Father of Chemistry"
