Description:

- Petticoats were abandoned for long, straight skirts.
- During WWI, women worked in shops, offices, and factories, so they needed practical clothing.
- In the 1920's, the "flapper dress" became popular. It was straight, short, adorned with fringe or beads and worn with long beads.
- In the 1930's women became active in sports so wide leg trousers and shorts above the knee were worn.
- Evening gowns were, and form-fitting.
- Men's fashion included a suit and by 1940, women began wearing suits, as well.
- During WWII fabric was rationed and used for military uniforms and equipment. Women's skirts became slimmer and shorter due to the lack of fabric available.
- Jumpsuits and slacks began to be worn as women replaced men in the factories.
- After WWII, styles changed radically.
- Fabric was no longer rationed.
- Christian Dior introduced the "New Look" for women.
