Description:
- After the French Revolution, France changed from a monarchy to a democracy.
- Dressing like royalty and upper classes was frowned on throughout Europe.
- The rise of the middle class meant that many people could afford to buy new clothes more often.
- Men's fashions included the cutaway jacket, men began wearing trousers, vest, and coats all the same colors.
- Women's fashions featured a raised waistline inspired by Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. This style is known as an empire.
- Gradually dresses became fuller and would feature a bustle that would give fullness to the back of the garment. Tightly laced corsets were essential.
- Dresses had high necklines and long sleeves.
- Young women that worked in factories and offices began to wear simple skirts and tailored white blouses.
