Nicolaus Copernicus (feb 19, 1473 – may 24, 1543)
Description:
Born in 1473 in Poland, Copernicus was an astronomer and mathematician at the time of the Renaissance. His model of the solar system with the Sun as the center of the universe challenged what had previously been accepted as the Earth as the center. This outraged the Catholic Church at the time since they believed that any solar system which held the Earth as secondary would make it harder to believe that Christ would die for people on a “lesser planet”. However, his discoveries persevered and are still used today.
