English Civil War (aug 22, 1642 – sep 3, 1651)

Description:

The English Civil War was fought between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists, primarliy over the power of the Monarchy. King Charles I desired to increase his power, which led to retaliation from parliament. Charles was eventually beheaded, and the monarchy was even completely removed for a short period of time, during the English Commonwealth. This is the first time that a democracy, even a poor one, existed in Europe. Additionally, the experience had during this time impacted many people who went on to have new ideas about people and government, including Locke and Hobbes.
