Peasant revolts in France (jan 1, 1630 – dec 1, 1700)

Description:

Dijon (like the mustard!), Bordeaux, Montpellier, Lyons, Amiens

Peasants were angry and revolted...everywhere (England, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy)

Bread prices: Demanded affordable food → govt attempted to quell by subsidizing bread, lightening loaves, etc, but people smelled the corner cutting and got even more mad

Taxes + participation in govt: mad that their taxes were too high & nobles had tax exemptions

Unsuccessful: lacked unity and strong leadership; couldn’t withstand forces of the state
